Dr. Neel Dewan Gupta, a New Orleans native, began his education at Lake Castle and later attended Benjamin Franklin High School, where he competed on the varsity track, cross-country, and basketball teams. He was active in student government through the Hi‑Y youth organization and spent a formative summer studying at Phillips Academy Andover—an experience that broadened his academic and cultural horizons. After high school, he earned the prestigious Tulane Dean’s Honor Scholarship.
At Tulane University, Dr. Gupta majored in Cellular and Molecular Biology, minored in Business, and served in student government throughout all four undergraduate years, including two terms as Class President. He graduated summa cum laude and as valedictorian of Tulane College, while his identical twin brother graduated salutatorian. At commencement, he was inducted as a finalist into the William Wallace Peery Society, recognizing the top three academic graduates. During his senior year, he also pursued his passion for the arts—particularly music, dance, and film—by studying at the Kishore Namit Acting Lab in Mumbai, India, an extraordinary experience that allowed him to learn alongside students from across India.
Identified early as a Creative Premedical Scholar, Dr. Gupta attended Tulane School of Medicine as a Jack Aron Scholarship recipient. He developed a deep passion for Diagnostic Radiology, the specialty he ultimately chose. During his fourth year, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, prompting Tulane’s temporary relocation to Houston, where he continued his medical training through extended programs at Baylor College of Medicine and UT Houston. He graduated from Tulane School of Medicine and returned home with his brother, committed to helping rebuild the city. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Tulane, serving as Chief Resident.
Dr. Gupta was then accepted into the highly regarded Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship at UC San Diego, training under Dr. Donald Resnick, a pioneer in Osteoradiology.
Throughout residency and for many years afterward, Dr. Gupta and his twin brother taught a TIDES Honors seminar for freshman premedical students titled Introduction to Clinical Medicine, a program he led for a decade. He had the privilege of mentoring many future physicians—including his colleague Dr. Jane Ball, one of his earliest students.
After returning to New Orleans, Dr. Gupta practiced in multiple private radiology groups while maintaining a strong commitment to academic medicine. He delivered regular lectures to Orthopedics, PM&R, and Radiology departments at Tulane, LSU, and Ochsner. Upon rejoining Tulane full‑time as an academic radiologist, he simultaneously pursued his MBA at Tulane, completing the program with his twin brother in December 2025. He further expanded his leadership training by completing Harvard Business School’s rigorous Program for Leadership Development (PLD) in June 2026.
Tulane has been a defining part of Dr. Gupta’s life—from attending sports‑skill camps in sixth grade to his current roles as Associate Clinical Professor of Radiology, Adjunct Associate Professor of Orthopedics, Section Chief of Musculoskeletal Radiology, and Director of the Musculoskeletal Radiology Fellowship. He is deeply involved in institutional and specialty‑wide service, including leadership within the Radiology Society of Louisiana (RSL), where he recently completed his term as President. He remains an active mentor to undergraduate students, medical students, residents, and fellows.
Dr. Gupta has been repeatedly recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor and is a multiyear Owl Club Award recipient for excellence in resident education.
He lives in New Orleans with his wife, Ayushi—originally from Michigan and passionate about non‑clinical healthcare delivery—and their two daughters, Leeyana (third grade) and Aarohi (kindergarten), both students at Isidore Newman. He enjoys coaching youth sports at Carrollton, traveling with his family, singing, gardening, musical theater, and real estate development. His identical twin brother, also a radiologist with children of similar ages, lives just a few blocks away.
